About Appalachian State University

The Appalachian State University traces its roots back in 1899, when a group of citizens from Watauga County, led by Blanford B. Dougherty and his brother, Dauphin D. Dougherty, began a movement which was focused on educating teachers from Northwest North Carolina, in order to prepare them for the public education system.


The athletic teams from Appalachian State University are nicknamed the Mountaineers, who compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA), being best known for their achievements in football, winning 3 consecutive Division I FCS National Championships (2005, 2006 and 2007), defeating the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Delaware.

The city of Boone, NC is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, in western North Carolina, USA and it was named after the renowned pioneer and explorer, Daniel Boone, who used to camp at a site, which was later agreed by historians to be located in the present city limits.


Boone City is best known for the fact that it is home of the Appalachian State University, the 5th largest university in the 16-campus system. It has a subtropical highland climate, which is a rarity for the cities in the South.
